Spur Gear Profile

- (1) : Pitch diameter (PCD): The diameter of the pitch circle, the key reference for gear size and speed.
- (2) : Outside diameter (OD): The major diameter of the gear.
- (3) : Base circle diameter (BD): The theoretical circle from which the involute tooth profile is generated.
- (4) : Root (or dedendum) diameter (ID): The minor diameter of the tooth.
- (5) : Pressure angle (α): The angle between the line of action and the line normal to the gear centers, defining force transmission in meshing gears.
- (6) : Tooth circular thickness (Sw): The thickness of the tooth at the pitch circle.
- (7) : Addendum (a): The tooth height above the pitch circle.
- (8) : Dedendum (d): The tooth depth below the pitch circle down to the minor diameter.
- (9) : Working depth (Hw): The depth a gear tooth penetrates into the mating gear space during engagement.
- (10) : Whole depth (H): The total tooth height from the major diameter down to the minor diameter.
- (11) : Clearance (C): The space between a gear’s minor diameter and the mating gear’s major diameter.
- (12) : Module (m): The ratio of pitch diameter to number of teeth (mm per tooth).
- (13) : Diametral pitch (DP): Number of gear teeth per inch of pitch diameter.
- (14) : Number of teeth Z: the total count of gear teeth around its pitch circle. It determines the gear ratio, module, and meshing capability.
